A large-scale study involving more than 270,000 UK Biobank participants has identified a connection between elevated blood levels of the amino acid tyrosine and reduced life expectancy in men, potentially reducing male lifespan by nearly one year.1 The research, conducted by teams from the University of Hong Kong and the University of Georgia, employed both observational analysis and Mendelian randomization methods to establish this association.1 Notably, no significant relationship between tyrosine levels and lifespan was observed in women.1
The researchers found that men naturally have higher tyrosine levels than women,1 and the negative correlation with longevity persisted even after controlling for other factors.1 However, the study did not directly test the effects of tyrosine supplements themselves, leaving the underlying biological mechanism unclear.1 Possible explanations for the association include insulin resistance and stress response neurotransmitters.1 In contrast, phenylalanine, another amino acid, showed no significant correlation with lifespan.1
