The distinctive odor associated with aging stems from chemical changes in the skin rather than poor hygiene. As people grow older, fatty acids in skin lipids undergo oxidation and decomposition, releasing a compound called 2-nonenal, which is primarily responsible for what is commonly termed "old person smell."1 A 2001 Japanese study first detected 2-nonenal at approximately age 40, marking the point at which this odor typically begins to emerge.1
Contrary to popular perception, research suggests the odor may be less objectionable than commonly assumed. In a 2012 study, 41 young adults evaluated clothing samples from three different age groups and rated the scent from older individuals as having "lower intensity and lower unpleasantness" compared to other age groups.1 While regular bathing can reduce some of the odor through partial removal, soap and water cannot completely eliminate 2-nonenal from the skin.1
To minimize age-related odor, experts recommend adopting antioxidant-rich habits, including consuming colorful fruits and vegetables high in vitamins C and E.1 Additionally, avoiding smoking and protecting skin from sun damage are beneficial antioxidant practices that may help slow the oxidative processes responsible for the compound's formation.1
