A longitudinal study of 5,931 secondary school students from Australia and the United Kingdom has revealed a reciprocal relationship between students' ability to handle academic setbacks and their capacity to manage disruption and change.1 The research, which measured outcomes across two timepoints separated by between four months and one year, found that students who were skilled at managing academic adversity subsequently became more adept at coping with disruption and change, and this pattern worked in reverse as well.1
The study distinguished between two key capabilities: academic resilience, defined as students' capacity to manage academic difficulties and setbacks, and adaptability, understood as the ability to adjust in response to interruption and change.1 The findings suggest these competencies reinforce one another over time.
Based on these insights, the research identifies six strategies to build academic resilience, each beginning with the letter C: confidence, control, commitment, coordination, composure, and connections.1 Additionally, three approaches support the development of adaptability: adjusting one's thinking patterns, modifying behavior, and recalibrating emotional responses.1
