France faces its lowest grape harvest in three decades due to an intense summer drought and heat wave. Preliminary estimates put wine production at just under 34 million hectolitres, a 6% decline from the previous year and 17% below the 2021-2025 average.1 The Champagne region is expected to see its harvest plummet by nearly 50% compared to last year, while the Jura region faces losses of 37%, and the Burgundy-Beaujolais region anticipates a one-third decrease.1
The extreme weather has severely impacted vineyards across the country. Average summer temperatures reached 24°C between June and August, with nearly half of France experiencing temperatures at or exceeding 40°C.1 These conditions triggered widespread soil drought, sunburn on grapes, and leaf loss. The stress caused harvesting to begin at least a week earlier than in the prior year.1
Despite these challenges, some in the industry urge caution about the severity of the situation. Cecile Mathieu, president of the Burgundy winemakers' association, stated: "We know this year's harvest will not be at full capacity, but we do not have exact figures, nor evidence that the situation is catastrophic."1 The French Ministry of Agriculture echoed this caution, noting that final figures will only be confirmed once regions submit official harvest declarations later in the year.1
