The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has determined that a nuclear reactor constructed during Syria's Assad regime was specifically configured to produce fissile material suitable for nuclear weapons.1 According to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the facility was engineered to generate material that could be "very efficiently" used directly for nuclear weapons manufacturing.1
The discovery came after Syria's new government granted IAEA inspectors access to nuclear sites previously undisclosed under Assad's rule.1 During an August inspection, investigators uncovered approximately 73 tons of natural uranium metal stored at a hidden location in Deir ez-Zor province.1 Syria had notified the IAEA of the site's existence on July 17.1 To reach the concealed nuclear materials, inspectors were required to dismantle walls and navigate through extremely narrow and difficult passages.1 The uranium has been placed under IAEA safeguards.1
