The Pinglv Canal, China's first nationally coordinated and constructed waterway connecting inland rivers to the sea since the founding of the People's Republic, will officially open to traffic on September 161. This strategic infrastructure project represents a major milestone for regional connectivity and economic development.
The canal spans 134.2 kilometers with a total investment of approximately 727 billion yuan, and is designed to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 tons1. The lock toll standard is set at 1.0 yuan per gross ton per passage, with a trial period extending through September 30, 20311. During the cultivation period through December 31, 2026, vessels will be exempted from lock fees, after which standard tolls will apply beginning January 1, 20271.
The waterway's operational benefits are substantial. It will reduce inland river shipping distances for southwest cargo by more than 560 kilometers compared to traditional routes, resulting in a comprehensive logistics cost reduction of 18–30 percent1. These efficiency gains are projected to generate annual transportation savings exceeding 50 billion yuan for society1. The project includes three dual-lane cascade locks—Madao, Qishi, and Qingnian—to facilitate smooth vessel passage1. Primary cargo sources will come from southwest regions including Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing, as well as Guangxi, with shipments encompassing nonferrous metals, building materials, mineral products, and agricultural and forestry goods1.
