A Chinese Coast Guard vessel, the 3501, entered the restricted waters around Dongsha Atoll early today, prompting an immediate response from Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration.1 The vessel was first detected outside the restricted zone at approximately 5 a.m. and proceeded into waters southwest of Dongsha Island by mid-morning.1 Taiwan's patrol ship Yunlin responded by broadcasting warnings in both Chinese and English and maintaining surveillance of the intruding vessel, with both parties continuing to face off at the scene.1
During communications, the Chinese Coast Guard vessel claimed sovereignty over "China Taiwan" and threatened that those who reject the "one China principle" would "pay a heavy price."1 Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration countered that "the Republic of China Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation that has no subordinate relationship with the People's Republic of China."1 According to official statistics, Taiwan's Coast Guard has expelled Chinese Coast Guard vessels 12 times in Dongsha waters since the beginning of the year.1
