On September 11, 2001, Brian Clark and Stanley Praimnath were working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center when American Airlines Flight 175 struck the building between the 77th and 85th floors at 9:03 a.m., just 17 minutes after a plane had hit the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.1 Clark, working on the 84th floor, and Praimnath, trapped on the 81st floor in an area engulfed in flames, became unlikely allies when Clark managed to reach and rescue Praimnath from the fire.1 The two men then descended 1,620 stairs together to escape the tower.1
Clark and Praimnath were among only four survivors from above the impact zone in the World Trade Center towers.1 Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks across New York and Washington that day.1 For Clark's employer, the death toll was particularly devastating—61 of his colleagues at the European brokerage firm perished in the attacks.1
Over the past 25 years, the bond forged between the two strangers has remained unbreakable.1 Clark, now 79 years old, retired in 2006, while Praimnath, approximately 69 years old, became a pastor that same year.1 The pair have recounted their survival story between several hundred and 1,200 times, continuing to share their message of survival and reconciliation.1 As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approached, Clark and Praimnath held commemorative events in New Jersey and Virginia respectively, keeping their extraordinary account alive for new generations.1
