Hafidh Amiri Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday while receiving treatment for heart disease at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.12 Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death, which occurred at 8:00 a.m. local time.2 Hassan, who became Tanzania's first gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in 2021, was subsequently buried at the family residence in Kizimkazi village, Zanzibar, on Monday evening.2
Hassan and President Samia had been married since 1978 and had four children together—three sons and one daughter, who serves as a member of parliament.2 The couple's loss prompted expressions of condolence from regional leaders. Kenya's President William Ruto stated: "President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son."2 Presidents Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi also issued statements of sympathy.2
