Australia's federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of its AusAlert emergency warning system on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 2 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. [2] Most compatible mobile devices will receive a 10-second alert that cannot be disabled. [1][2]
The system is designed to address limitations in the existing SMS-based emergency notification infrastructure. [2] According to Pat Hetherington, interim coordinator-general of the National Emergency Management Authority (Nema), the current system relies on standard SMS capability and has experienced significant delays during emergencies and disasters. [2] Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain has characterized AusAlert as a "far superior" alternative. [2] The system was developed following recommendations from the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires royal commission and is scheduled for full deployment in October 2026. [2]
The alert is designed to be loud enough to capture attention but quieter than a fire alarm. [2] Approximately 80 percent of Apple iPhones and around 1.6 million Android devices will receive the warning. [2] Compatible devices include iPhones 11 and newer running iOS 14.4 or higher, select Apple Watches, and Android devices running version 12 or later. [1][2]
Domestic violence advocates and national emergency management agencies have advised individuals using hidden "safe phones" to power down their devices within 24 hours after the test to protect personal safety. [1] These individuals may alternatively turn off their phones one hour before and one hour after the test. [2]
