British design industry leaders have dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence will displace professional designers, arguing instead that generative AI will enhance rather than eliminate design work.1 Mat Hunter, chief executive of the Design Council, stated: "We are aware that technology always displaces people with new ways of working. Industry data supports this optimistic outlook. The design sector grew 40 percent between 2019 and the end of 2023, outpacing the broader economy's average growth of 23 percent.1 Employment in design increased by 15 percent between 2020 and 2025, suggesting that AI tool adoption has had limited impact on job demand so far.1 The sector now supports 22,700 design positions across architecture, services, and manufacturing.1 The UK design industry generates £136.7 billion in total value, exceeding the retail sector at £114 billion and nearly double the accommodation and food service industry at £70 billion.1
The reassurance from industry leaders contrasts with broader public anxiety. Research from King's Institute found that 57 percent of the public believe AI will cause mass unemployment.1 Meanwhile, education data reveals a concerning trend: the number of students taking design and technology GCSEs has declined 68 percent over the past decade.1
