The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held its 2026 matriculation ceremony on September 5, welcoming over 5,000 new students, including more than 450 international undergraduates, along with graduate students.1 During the event, President Xu Yangsheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering,1 emphasized that "the most important thing about coming to university is to broaden your horizons."1
Drawing an analogy to dining, Xu encouraged the new cohort to break free from conventional thinking patterns and embrace unfamiliar domains.1 "Before you lies an enormous menu with thousands of dishes,"1 he told students, stressing that genuine innovation requires stepping outside one's comfort zone and gaining wisdom through repeated attempts and practice rather than remaining confined to high scores or familiar fields.1 He further argued that "to achieve disruptive innovation, you must break free from your inherent patterns of thought,"1 and that "real innovation does not depend on average performance but rather on extreme values and variance."1 Xu also highlighted a critical limitation of artificial intelligence, noting that "its greatest weakness is the difficulty in breaking out of its own thinking framework."1
