Australia's Northern Territory has begun extracting natural gas from the Beetaloo Basin, located approximately 500 kilometers southeast of Darwin across an area of 28,000 square kilometers.1 The basin is recognized as one of Australia's largest onshore gas fields, with estimated reserves of 4.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.1
The Australian federal government has committed at least A$220 million to the project, while the Northern Territory government has provided a A$7.5 million loan guarantee to Tamboran Resources.1 Additionally, Beetaloo Energy Australia received A$15 million in taxpayer funding in 2024 alone.1 The government projects the development will generate over A$1.7 billion in revenue and support 13,000 jobs.1
However, scientific research indicates the project's annual emissions would equal 49 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, representing approximately 11 percent of Australia's 2021 total emissions.1 Environmental advocates and researchers argue that even if the project were to offset 5 percent of these emissions through other means, this falls far short of compensating for the environmental damage.1 Demand for liquefied natural gas is expected to begin declining by the mid-2030s at the earliest,1 raising concerns that the project may become a stranded asset. Climate modeling also predicts that many areas of the Northern Territory could become uninhabitable within decades due to climate change.1
