Short-form video platforms exploit the brain's reward system through rapid visual transitions and algorithmic precision, triggering dopamine release and creating a cycle of addiction, according to experts at Beijing Hui Long Guan Hospital's Center for Addiction Medicine.1 The fast-paced content delivery weakens the prefrontal cortex's ability to control impulses, the region responsible for behavioral restraint and decision-making.1
Director Yang Kebing of the addiction medicine center identified two critical indicators of problematic use: when pleasure becomes narrowly focused on a single source, and when viewing becomes uncontrollable.1 Individuals with addictive predispositions or those experiencing depression are particularly vulnerable to developing compulsive viewing habits.1 Short-video addiction can impair concentration and memory, disrupting work and academic performance.1
Those not yet at addiction levels can manage their usage by redirecting attention or engaging in outdoor activities.1 However, severe cases require professional intervention from hospital addiction specialists.1
