A woman's mother narrowly avoided a potentially fatal poisoning incident when a highly toxic red-spotted guard crab was accidentally mixed into seafood purchased at a local market.1 The red-spotted guard crab carries tetrodotoxin, a deadly neurotoxin present in pufferfish, and even small amounts can be lethal; high-temperature cooking cannot destroy the toxin's potency.1
Beyond this particular incident, several other marine organisms pose serious health risks to seafood consumers. The upright scavenging crab, distributed primarily in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, East Africa, and regions of southern China including Guangdong and Hainan, also contains tetrodotoxin within its body.1 Textile cone snails can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness when consumed; severe cases may result in muscle paralysis, respiratory failure, and death, with no known antidote currently available.1 The blue-ringed octopus produces venom approximately 1,000 times more potent than cyanide, and even minute quantities are sufficient to prove fatal.1 Additionally, Vibrio parahaemolyticus can multiply exponentially at 35 degrees Celsius, reaching pathogenic concentrations within six hours.1
To ensure safety, seafood should be steamed or boiled with the center temperature reaching 100 degrees Celsius and sustained for several minutes.1
