Local authorities responded urgently to the dangerous conditions. Long Beach health officials issued warnings advising against swimming in any beach or bay for at least three days,1 while Newport Beach lifeguards executed 177 rescue operations on Saturday.1 The chief lifeguard cautioned that conditions presented "red flag warnings from one end of the beach to the other,"1 and hazardous beach conditions are anticipated to persist for several days.1
