Chinese hiker Zhang Ning became stranded in Nepal's Langtang Valley following a devastating mudslide disaster but was successfully evacuated after multiple days of ordeal.1 On the morning of August 26, Zhang Ning was trekking and rock climbing in Langtang National Park when he received warnings of flooding.1 His phone signal was cut off that afternoon, but when connectivity returned the following day, he learned of a catastrophic ice and rock collapse on the north slope of Langtang Lirung peak and severe mudslide activity in the area.1
The disaster rendered the western access route into the Langtang Valley impassable.1 On September 1, Zhang Ning and a Nepali companion decided to attempt an escape from the valley.1 After hours of difficult trekking through treacherous terrain, the two reached the settlement of Dunche on September 3.1 With coordination from the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, both were evacuated by Nepali military helicopter on the morning of September 4.1 Following the helicopter's arrival in Bhidel, a Chinese expatriate named Hao Liang drove Zhang Ning back to Kathmandu, a journey that took approximately two hours.1
