A food safety incident has emerged in Yuzhong County, Gansu Province, where vegetable farmers and distributors have been illegally treating tender lettuce stems with prohibited colorants.1 The discovery follows a prior contamination case involving formaldehyde-treated cabbage in Hebei.1
Chinese food blogger "Da Lei's Food Science Daily" uncovered the practice on September 5th, revealing that farmers at vegetable distribution points in Dingyuan Town, Daqian Town, and 11 other locations within Yuzhong County have been soaking lettuce stems in banned dyes—specifically Brilliant Blue and Lemon Yellow—to conceal yellowing and surface damage that occurs during harvesting and storage.1 Testing of solutions from three vegetable warehouses detected the prohibited colorants in two samples, while inspections found that over half of the 13 warehouses examined exhibited such illegal soaking practices.1
Health experts have raised serious concerns about the practice. Liu Shaowei, a food safety specialist, warned that prolonged consumption of vegetables treated this way may trigger allergic reactions and potentially carry cancer risks.1 In response, Yuzhong County's Agricultural Bureau has announced that the affected lettuce stems have been sealed and destroyed.1
