Volkswagen Group internal files have exposed stark differences in manufacturing costs across its global operations, with the German Emden plant spending significantly more per vehicle than its Chinese counterpart.1 The Emden facility incurs production costs of 4,850 euros per vehicle, more than four times the 1,078 euros per vehicle cost at the Tianjin plant in China.1 This disparity reflects broader labor cost variations, as workers at Emden earn 74 euros per hour compared to 12 euros per hour in Tianjin, while the German plant operates 1,282 effective working hours annually against 2,065 hours in China.1
In response to these structural challenges, Volkswagen has approved a restructuring plan involving approximately 50,000 new job cuts, building on an additional 50,000 positions already agreed upon in previous negotiations, for a combined total of 100,000 job losses representing roughly 15 percent of the global workforce.1 The newly announced reduction of approximately 47,000 positions will be distributed across multiple regions: 26,000 in Germany, 9,300 in other European Union countries, 5,700 in North America, 1,600 in China, 1,500 in South America, and 2,900 in other regions.1 The company projects that closing German facilities will generate net gains of 2.9 billion euros by 2038, indicating management's assessment that drastic cost-cutting measures are necessary for the group's economic viability.1
