Ten days after a devastating flood struck Nepal, rescue teams successfully recovered a Chinese man and a Nepali woman on Saturday.1 The Chinese citizen, identified as Lu Haitao, was extracted from a 225-meter tunnel at the Upper Trishuli Hydroelectric Project by a joint operation involving the Nepali military and South Korean disaster experts.12 Lu Haitao was airlifted to Kathmandu Military Hospital for medical evaluation, where his vital signs were reported as stable.2 He had survived by climbing to a high point inside the tunnel during the initial disaster and demonstrated strong survival instinct and good physical condition, according to Lieutenant General Bandar, head of the Nepali military medical department.2
A second survivor, a Nepali woman, was rescued in the Nuwakot area during the same operation.1 Authorities continue to search for thousands of people still reported missing following the August 26 mudslide disaster.2 Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maomin expressed that the successful rescue was "a miracle," and China's embassy has deployed tunnel rescue specialists and forensic experts to support the ongoing relief efforts.2
