Republican Senator Thom Tillis has called on President Trump to remove Hegseth, characterizing his management of active-duty military personnel as "the most inept" and alleging that he has retreated into stoking cultural warfare rather than addressing substantive military challenges.1 Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned following repeated conflicts with Hegseth over blocked officer promotions and what critics describe as a purge of senior commanders.1 Hegseth blocked seven military officers from advancing to the rank of two-star general, with the majority of those impeded or removed identified as Black or female.1

On the operational front, Hegseth extended Middle East troop deployments into mid-2026, affecting 50,000 American military personnel and 19 naval vessels.1 Multiple commanders registered formal "non-concur" objections to the extension, warning that the deployment could compromise America's ability to fulfill commitments in other regions.1 In related military operations against Iran, strikes have resulted in civilian casualties, including five deaths at a wedding in the southern city of Kohsak, among them a six-year-old child.1 Since May 5, Hegseth has not held formal Pentagon briefings, and reports indicate he is considering a bid for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.1
