The Asia-Pacific Media High-Level Forum commenced on September 5 in Shenzhen, bringing together over 400 representatives from more than 40 countries and regions, as well as delegates from United Nations agencies and international organizations.12 Li Shuulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of the Publicity Department, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech.12 Huang Kunming, also a member of the Political Bureau and Communist Party Secretary of Guangdong Province, was present and addressed the gathering.2
The forum, organized by the Publicity Department, Xinhua News Agency, and the Guangdong Provincial People's Government with the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government as co-host, adopted the theme "Building the Prosperous Path of Asia-Pacific Community: Media Consensus and Action."12 Participants emphasized the vital role of Asia-Pacific media in developing an open Asia-Pacific economy and promoting regional prosperity.1 The gathering coincides with this year being designated as the "APEC China Year," during which China will host the thirty-third informal meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders.12
A significant outcome of the forum was the establishment of a preparatory committee for the Asia-Pacific Media Cooperation Partner Initiative, launched jointly by 16 Chinese and international media organizations.12
