A group of chimpanzees that participated in hepatitis B vaccine experiments conducted by American researchers decades ago are now receiving comprehensive health evaluations at a sanctuary in Liberia.1 More than 400 West African chimpanzees were used in experiments spanning from the 1970s through the early 2000s, with many captured from the wild during their infancy.1 The Humane Society World Animal Protection facility assumed permanent care responsibility for 60 of these chimpanzees in 2015 and has since implemented regular health assessments as part of long-term care management.1
The health checks conducted at the facility include dental examinations, cardiopulmonary assessments, neurological evaluations, blood work, vaccine boosters, and nail trimming to monitor each individual's condition and develop personalized care plans.1 The rescued chimpanzees have an average age between 30 and 35 years old.1 West African chimpanzees are classified as critically endangered, and Liberia is home to the second-largest population of this subspecies in West Africa, second only to Guinea.1
