The incident represents a continuation of broader safety concerns plaguing the program since its inception. As of September 2, the MBG scheme has affected more than 50,000 people across 560 separate incidents spanning 245 districts and cities in 36 provinces.1 Sudaryono, director of the National Nutrition Agency, told a parliamentary health committee hearing that 80 to 90 percent of previous incidents were linked to failures in adhering to food safety procedures.1 Authorities have responded by closing at least 833 kitchens due to inadequate hygiene standards and are intensifying oversight of approximately 27,000 meal centers nationwide.1 The program is projected to cost roughly $28 billion by 2029.1
