Two Brazilian Supreme Court justices have entered into a fierce conflict, with each demanding severe sanctions against the other.1 Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Justice André Mendonça are at the center of a deepening dispute involving investigations into the collapsed Banco Master, which has exposed connections between Moraes and the bank's owner Daniel Valcareggi, as well as legal services provided by Moraes's wife to the institution.1 The 57-year-old Moraes, who gained prominence last year by leading cases that resulted in former president Jair Bolsonaro's imprisonment for an alleged failed coup attempt, now faces mounting pressure to resign.1 Mendonça, 53, is the Supreme Court's first evangelical member and was appointed by Bolsonaro.1
The investigation has uncovered damaging evidence, including intercepted messages in which Valcareggi told Moraes: "I thank you for your life" and urged him to "see if you can stop all this evil against Banco Master."1 Moraes's wife received a contract valued at 130 million reais (approximately $25 million) for providing legal services to the bank.1 Additionally, presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro became implicated in the scandal after receiving approximately $21 million allegedly intended for a documentary about his father.1
Tensions escalated when Mendonça met privately with the imprisoned banker Valcareggi earlier this month without court authorization.1 Moraes subsequently demanded an investigation into Mendonça, alleging that his actions are politically motivated and constitute impeachable offenses.1 While the Senate has received dozens of impeachment requests against Moraes, it has received only a handful against Mendonça.1 Chief Justice Luiz Edson Fachin has requested clarifications from both Mendonça and Moraes, as well as Attorney General Paulo Gonet and Federal Police Director André Rodriguez.1
