A federal judge has ruled that former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema can be sued in North Carolina under the state's "homewrecker" law, commonly known as alienation of affection.1 Federal District Judge David Bragdon determined on Friday that North Carolina has jurisdiction over Sinema based on nine text messages she sent to Matthew Ammel, a security officer working on her team, while he was located in the state.1
The lawsuit was filed by Heather Ammel, the ex-wife of Matthew Ammel, who alleges that Sinema knowingly interfered with her marriage and is seeking damages.1 In early 2024, Heather Ammel discovered romantic and explicit messages that her husband had exchanged with Sinema through the Signal application.1 According to Sinema's testimony in July 2024, the relationship between the two became physical during a trip to Napa, California on May 27, 2024.1 Matthew Ammel, who retired from the military in 2022 before joining Sinema's security detail, and Heather Ammel separated on November 1, 2024.1
North Carolina is among the minority of U.S. states that allows abandoned spouses to sue third parties under alienation of affection statutes.1
