The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Inspector General released a report documenting a pattern of misconduct by former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer during her tenure.12 The 38-page report concluded that Chavez-DeRemer fostered a "toxic, intimidating and demeaning" work environment while violating multiple departmental policies.12
The investigation, based on interviews with 53 current and former Labor Department employees as well as one employee from another federal agency,1 examined over 500 documents, images and videos.1 The allegations encompassed inappropriate relationships with security personnel, violations of travel regulations that mixed personal and official business, violations of alcohol policies, directing staff to perform personal tasks during work hours, and failure to report gifts through proper channels.1 Senior staff members accused Chavez-DeRemer of verbally berating employees in front of colleagues and making hiring decisions based on appearance rather than professional qualifications.1 One documented incident alleged that during a private trip to Oregon, Chavez-DeRemer stopped at a strip club and instructed her driver to give money to performers.1
According to the report, at least 13 personal trips and 5 Las Vegas trips utilized agency funds, including three nights at a luxury Palm Beach hotel.2 Chavez-DeRemer's attorney, Nick Oberholtzer, responded to the findings by stating she "does not believe she violated any laws."2 She was appointed to the position in January 2025 and resigned in April 2026.2 Two of her senior aides—Labor Department Chief of Staff Chie Han and Deputy Chief of Staff Rebecca Wright—departed in March 2026 due to misconduct findings in the investigation.2
