The scheme included multiple text messages from Ross, in which he referenced wanting to "make this happen" before Secker's appearance at a Joplin Republican Women's luncheon 1.
Evidence against Ross includes recovered packets containing white powder and pink and white capsules that tested positive for cocaine and Adderall 1. FBI investigators obtained multiple text messages from Ross to campaign staff documenting the alleged plot, and federal agents provided the campaign manager with a covert recording device on July 31 following a public corruption tip from Joplin police on July 30 2. Ross won the primary election on August 4 with a margin of 33 votes over Secker 2.
Missouri Republican Party Chair Peter Kinder called for Ross to withdraw from the race 12. U.S. Attorney R. Matthew Price stated that "candidates should campaign with integrity, honesty and respect for their opponents" 1.
