South Korea's National Security Office expressed serious concern over language used by China's Foreign Ministry following high-level talks between the two countries.1 In a news briefing on August 28, National Security Office Director Wei Shenglo stated that China's statement contained phrasing about "the two Korean nations," which contradicted South Korea's position and warranted grave attention.1
The disputed language appeared in China's Foreign Ministry materials released after Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South Korean Foreign Minister Zhao Xian in Seoul on August 19.1 The original Chinese text stated that China was "pleased to see the Korean and North Korean nations gradually moving toward peaceful coexistence and ultimately achieving lasting peace and stability on the Peninsula."1 South Korea contended that this formulation conflicted with commitments made in the 1992 Sino-South Korean Joint Communique on Diplomatic Recognition, which states that "China supports the reunification of the Peninsula."1 Seoul conveyed to Beijing that such phrasing could easily cause misunderstandings and urged China to exercise restraint in using it.1
