A previously unrecognized kidney ailment has surfaced among young Central American and Mexican immigrant laborers in Texas, according to research led by epidemiologist Rebecca Fischer.1 The condition, known as CKDu (Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin), was identified in a study of patients treated at Houston's Ben Taub Hospital between 2012 and 2015, during which 17% of 346 uninsured or undocumented patients presenting with kidney failure could not be attributed to conventional causes.1 The research, published in March 2025, suggests that thousands of acute dialysis visits annually in Texas may be linked to CKDu.1
The disease predominantly affects laborers under 40 years old who have experienced prolonged exposure to extreme heat while performing manual work.1 Epidemiologist Jason Glaser characterized the plight of affected patients, stating: "They are like Olympic athletes, yet they survive on dirty water and poor food."1 Public health efforts to address the outbreak face significant obstacles, including policy barriers and the reluctance of vulnerable populations to participate in research due to fears of deportation.1 In June 2023, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation prohibiting local ordinances requiring water breaks and other heat-stress mitigation measures at work.1 Additionally, the U.S. Department of Labor withdrew funding from La Isla Network's hydration, shade, and rest program.1
