A mistrial was declared Tuesday in the case involving Sacramento's deadliest shooting. [1] The jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on murder charges against defendants Mtula Payton and Dandrae Martin, who were accused of responsibility for a mass shooting on April 3, 2022, that killed six people and wounded at least 12 others. [1] Both defendants were convicted only on charges of violating a felony prohibition on firearm possession. [1]
Payton and Martin had faced murder charges that could have resulted in sentences ranging from 15 years to life imprisonment. [1] The trial, which lasted over two months, included dozens of hours of shooting footage and testimony from numerous witnesses, but prosecutors ultimately reduced the charges from first-degree murder to second-degree murder due to jury deadlock.
