FIFA has accused the European football body UEFA of orchestrating a "smear campaign" and "fishing expedition" against FIFA President Gianni Infantino in connection with a controversial plan to sell commercial rights to World Cup events.12 The dispute centers on FIFA's now-abandoned initiative to sell stakes in major tournaments to private equity investors for $4.2 billion, which was withdrawn on August 1 after facing strong opposition.2

UEFA has filed discovery requests in multiple U.S. federal courts—in New York's Southern District, Florida, and Colorado—seeking testimony and documents related to potential criminal proceedings in Switzerland.12 According to UEFA's legal team, Infantino claimed the plan would unlock FIFA's commercial potential, but it was actually designed "to secure permanent equity stakes in FIFA's most valuable assets for Infantino and his inner circle and to profit from them."2 UEFA has also threatened to boycott FIFA World Cups if the arrangement had proceeded and has called for a "genuine independent external review."1 The investor involved, Thrive Capital Management led by Josh Kushner, subsequently stated that while supporting the initiative's original intent, it had underestimated "the political dynamics of global football" and would have declined participation had it foreseen the consequences.2

The conflict has fractured FIFA's regional support structure ahead of Infantino's bid for a fourth term in March 2027.1 CONCACAF (the North American, Central American, and Caribbean football confederation) and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) have demanded Infantino's resignation, while only the South American and African confederations remain supportive.1 FIFA has filed a motion in Colorado court seeking to delay or dismiss the discovery process.1
