Argentine President Javier Milei escalated his country's long-standing territorial dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, announcing punitive measures against oil companies operating in the region while citing encouragement from US President Donald Trump's recent statements about potentially reconsidering American neutrality on the issue.15
In a nationwide television address, Milei declared sanctions against companies involved in the Sea Lion oil project, located approximately 130 miles north of the Falkland Islands and jointly planned by British firm Rockhopper Exploration and Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, which aim to begin production by 2028.31 Milei warned that "if we do not act quickly, in a few months they will have the capacity to extract oil from our seabed."3 He also announced plans to fund a naval base in Argentina's Tierra del Fuego region to strengthen the country's military presence in the South Atlantic.1
Trump's recent comments provided the backdrop for Milei's actions. In an interview with GB News, Trump appeared to condition American support for Britain on the country's backing for US military actions, stating that Britain "was not there to help me" and claiming he had requested military vessels that were refused.2 When asked directly whether the US would assist Britain in a Falkland Islands conflict, Trump hedged, saying "I always look at every single position. It's just one of many, many things," and expressed openness to reviewing America's stance on the islands' sovereignty.125
The British government swiftly responded to these developments. A spokesman for Prime Minister's office reiterated that "sovereignty belongs to the United Kingdom" and emphasized that "the islanders' right to self-determination is paramount," referencing a 2013 referendum in which 99.8 percent of the Falkland Islands' residents voted overwhelmingly to retain their status as a British Overseas Territory.123
The dispute carries historical weight: the 1982 Falkland War resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British military personnel, and 3 islanders.123
