Chinese attorney Wang Xiahong has fled to Taiwan after facing pressure from authorities for providing legal defense to members of the Zion Church, one of China's largest unregistered underground congregations.1 Wang began representing Zion Church members in legal proceedings starting in October 2025.1 The Chinese authorities demanded that Wang and her colleagues at Beijing Kaimen Law Firm voluntarily dissolve the practice, threatening forced closure if they refused.1
The Zion Church operates across approximately 40 Chinese cities with more than 100 gathering points and roughly 5,000 members.1 In October, 18 church members, including founder Jin Mingri, were detained.1 Jin Mingri was subsequently released within two months following a May meeting between U.S. President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.1 However, authorities have continued to exert pressure on the church and related individuals.1
Taiwan's relevant authorities have granted Wang temporary residency on the island, though they clarified that Taiwan cannot process political asylum cases from mainland Chinese citizens.1 Wang is currently exploring settlement options, including the possibility of pursuing education in the United States or Canada.1
