A 66-year-old patient with end-stage kidney disease has survived for a record nine months on a genetically modified pig kidney without requiring dialysis, marking a historic milestone in xenotransplantation.1 Tim Andrews, who developed terminal kidney failure due to type 2 diabetes with only a 9% chance of receiving a human kidney transplant within five years, received the engineered organ from a pig named Wilma that underwent 69 genetic modifications.1 The pig kidney functioned for 271 days before vascular damage led to organ failure.1 Subsequently, Andrews underwent successful transplantation with a human donor kidney, which remained healthy six months after the procedure without generating new human tissue antibodies.1
This case represents the first instance of a genetically modified pig kidney serving as a temporary bridge organ leading to permanent human transplantation.1 Previous attempts at pig kidney xenotransplantation had achieved survival periods of no more than two months, and a separate case in 2024 ended after 52 days when the recipient died from cardiac complications.1 No pig viruses or pig pathogens were detected during or after the procedure.1 The research has been published in The Lancet medical journal.1
