Steinem published a collection of quotations in 2019 titled "The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off!"1 Throughout her career, she articulated a clear vision of reproductive autonomy as central to gender equality. "If we have reproductive freedom—the ability to decide ourselves when and whether to have children and what happens to our bodies—sexism can be reversed," she stated in May 2016.1 She was equally direct about the absence of female leadership in American politics, remarking that "we live in a democracy, which is one of the few nations in the world that has never had a woman elected as a leader. It's a bit absurd. We're just choosing from half the nation's talent."1
Following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, Steinem underscored the inseparability of bodily autonomy from democracy itself. "Clearly, there is no democracy without women and men having the right to make decisions about their own bodies," she declared in June 2022.1
