A Norwegian court has ordered the seizure of a Russian vessel to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award granted to Ukraine's state energy company Naftogaz.1 The ship, named Professor Molchanov, was detained on September 3 at the port of Barentsburg in Svalbard.1
The arbitration ruling, issued by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2023, ordered Russia to compensate Naftogaz for losses stemming from earlier disputes.1 According to Sergii Fedorenko, Naftogaz's acting CEO, "Russia cannot evade responsibility simply by refusing to comply with an international arbitral award."1
Russia has rejected the seizure and indicated it will pursue legal channels to secure the vessel's release. Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov stated, "We insist on the immediate release of the vessel and on ensuring the safety of its passengers and crew."1 Moscow has also summoned the Norwegian ambassador to lodge a formal protest over the impoundment.1
