Du Bin has a long track record in journalism and documentary work.1 Beginning in 2004, he photographed news stories for the New York Times Beijing bureau, later transitioning to freelance work and independent documentary production from 2011 onward.1 His commitment to human rights documentation was recognized when he received the 10th Lin Zhao Memorial Award from the Independent Chinese Writers' Association in 2015.1 The photographer had faced legal troubles before: he was secretly detained and released in June 2013, and was held for over a month in December 2020 on suspicion of inciting trouble before being freed.1
Prior to his sentencing, Du Bin reportedly requested permission to return home to see his critically ill mother one final time, a plea that was rejected.1
