Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Ben Delo has made a second £4 million donation to Reform UK, bringing his total contributions to the party to £8 million and establishing him as its second-largest donor 1. The gift follows an initial £4 million contribution made in January 1.
Delo's position as Reform UK's second major backer comes after Thai crypto investor Christopher Harborne, who has donated £15 million in total 1. Delo was convicted in the United States in 2022 on charges related to insufficient anti-money laundering controls at the cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX and was subsequently pardoned by Donald Trump 1. In an April article published in The Telegraph, Delo stated: "Since the start of this year, I have donated £4m to help Nigel Farage to build Reform UK into a genuine alternative party of government" 1.
Reform UK has maintained that Delo's donations do not trigger the overseas donor cap that came into effect in March of this year, which restricts annual contributions to £100,000 from donors not registered on the UK electoral roll for at least 12 months 1. Party donations in the second quarter reached £17 million overall, representing an increase from £11 million during the same period the previous year 1.
