According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Queensland recorded approximately 12,000 fewer crime victims in 2025 compared to the previous year, representing a decline of over 4 percent 1. The decrease was widespread across several categories, including assaults which fell by approximately 4 percent, sexual offences which declined by about 2 percent, and robberies which dropped by approximately 13 percent 1. Motor vehicle thefts also decreased by around 2 percent 1.
However, not all crime categories showed improvement. Attempted murders rose from 41 to 42 incidents, while cases of manslaughter increased by 2 1. On a national scale, robbery victims declined by approximately 8 percent, and sexual assault victims fell for the first time in 14 years, though the reduction was less than 1 percent 1.
State officials attributed the decline to tough-on-crime policies. Queensland's Premier David Crisafulli pledged during the 2024 election that he would resign if victim numbers did not fall during his first term 1. However, opposition leader Steven Miles questioned the accuracy of the data, suggesting that the significant drop in domestic violence cases was unique to Queensland and may reflect changes in crime recording methods rather than an actual reduction in offences 1.
