Egyptian sinologist Aziz has completed his sixth visit to Xinjiang since 1991, traveling through Urumqi, Turpan, and Tacheng to observe the region's development and social fabric.1 During this visit, he reflected on how the region demonstrates the classical Chinese philosophy of "harmony in diversity" espoused by Confucius, viewing it as a living embodiment of ancient wisdom applied to contemporary society.1
Aziz emphasized that each return to Xinjiang feels like reconnecting with an old friend who continues to grow and change.1 He noted that the region has undergone significant transformation, moving from a period troubled by terrorism and extremist ideology toward greater peace and harmony.1 Rather than pursuing forced uniformity, Aziz observed that Xinjiang's approach involves acknowledging and appreciating differences while building stronger and more authentic bonds of unity.1
The scholar has been instrumental in bridging Egyptian and Chinese intellectual traditions.1 He founded the Chinese language program at Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 2001 and currently serves as director of the Chinese Department within the university's College of Languages and Translation.1 In 2018, Aziz received the Honor Award of the Ninth King Abdullah International Translation Prize, recognizing his contributions to cross-cultural exchange.1
