Two people have been shot dead in Sydney within two days in what authorities believe are cases of mistaken identity linked to organized crime.12 A 23-year-old university student, Marco Tapia, was killed in his bed in Glen Alpines on Tuesday, followed by the shooting of 40-year-old Joshua McDonald in Merrylands West on Wednesday afternoon.12 McDonald, who had no criminal record and no connection to organized crime, was shot from the rear passenger door of what is believed to be a stolen Audi.2
Police believe McDonald was killed in a case of mistaken identity, with the intended target being Moshtaba Hafiz, who is associated with the Alameddine crime family.2 Police had issued multiple warnings to Hafiz about threats to his life, including several days before the shooting.2 Since the start of last year, there have been six suspected mistaken identity shootings in Sydney.1
Police Minister Yasmin Catley denied that gang violence is spiraling out of control, stating that "we will not hand the streets over to organized crime."1 She emphasized that police have sufficient resources to combat organized crime gangs.1 Police Commissioner Ian Lanyon indicated that increased high-visibility police patrols would be deployed in response.2 The commissioner confirmed both shootings are under investigation and stated that young people are increasingly being recruited to commit deadly crimes, often for minimal payment.1 He also indicated that "most of this organized crime is being orchestrated from overseas."1
Over the past year, 800 people have been arrested by a specialized task force in connection with gang violence.1 In May 2023, the death of 23-year-old plumber John Visacki led to the establishment of a 150-person task force known as Operation Falcon.2
