Democrats are pursuing competitive races in traditionally Republican-controlled congressional districts, viewing them as potential opportunities for November victories should national political dynamics shift in their favor.1 The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is expanding its battlefield into conservative strongholds, with committee chair Susan DelBene stating that "House Democrats are going deep into Trump territory to expand the battlefield."1 In response, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee dismissed these efforts, saying "national Democrats can continue throwing darts at the map, but nobody is buying it."1
Five key districts have emerged as potential battlegrounds despite their Republican leanings. Nebraska's 1st District has not elected a Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 election.1 Kentucky's 6th District showed signs of vulnerability when the state's largest county, Fayette County, backed the Democratic gubernatorial candidate by more than 40 percentage points in 2023.1 Nevada's 2nd District has never elected a Democrat, though Trump increased his vote share across all three presidential election cycles between 2016 and 2024.1 South Carolina's 1st District, despite Trump's decisive 2024 victory there, presents a different dynamic given the absence of an incumbent representative.1
