The 83rd Venice Film Festival advanced this week with the Thursday evening premiere of two high-profile entries vying for the festival's top honor. Martin McDonagh's dark comedy "Wild Horse Nine," starring Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich, and Werner Herzog's "Bucking Fastard" both debuted on the Lido, joining the competition for the Golden Lion award 1.
"Wild Horse Nine" follows two CIA operatives dispatched to Easter Island in the lead-up to Chile's 1973 military coup 1. The film is scheduled for theatrical release this autumn 1. McDonagh, whose previous Venice premieres included "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "Banshee of Inisherin," brings a track record of festival success—his prior works earned multiple Oscar nominations, with "Three Billboards" claiming two Academy Awards 1.
The festival's jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, will determine the winners at a ceremony on September 12th 1. Other films competing for the Golden Lion include Danny Boyle's "Ink" and the documentary "NAZA" 1.
