A three-year-old girl died following infection with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) contracted at a petting farm in Victoria, Australia.1 The child was admitted to the intensive care unit at Monash Children's Hospital, where she remained for six weeks before her death.1 HUS, a bacterial infection originating from the intestines of farm animals, caused her kidneys to fail and resulted in permanent brain damage.1
This marks the second HUS case linked to the same Victorian farm in 2024.1 An earlier patient, a two-year-old boy, was hospitalized in May and underwent seventeen days of dialysis treatment before making a full recovery.1 Health officials have recommended increased handwashing stations and warning signs about infection risks be posted at the farm's entrance.1 Young children under five years old and immunocompromised individuals face the highest risk of severe infection.1 Victoria has recorded more than 160 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infection in 2024, compared to 156 cases for the entire year of 2023 and 235 cases in 2022.1
Parents and caregivers are advised to seek medical attention if children present symptoms including bloody or pus-filled stools, reduced urination, lethargy, pale lips, or small spots appearing on the skin.1
