Connor Dean, a six-year-old boy with Down syndrome, died from severe scurvy caused by critical vitamin C deficiency in Queensland, Australia.1 The boy died on August 10, 2024, following cardiac arrest during a surgical procedure under general anesthesia at Queensland Children's Hospital on July 18, 2024.1 Queensland coroner Stephanie Gallagher determined that vitamin C deficiency was the most likely underlying factor in the cardiac arrest that resulted in brain damage and his subsequent death.1
Medical evidence revealed that Connor's blood vitamin C level was below 1 micromole per litre, far below the normal range of 20–120 micromole per litre.1 Over the eleven months preceding his death, the boy gained only 300 grams in weight, reflecting serious nutritional deficiency.1 Coroner Gallagher noted that scurvy is extremely rare in Australia and severe cases are almost always identified and treated.1 A paediatric medical opinion presented in the inquiry suggested that had Connor taken a different multivitamin containing vitamin C, he would not have developed the vitamin C deficiency and the clinical features of scurvy that led to his death.1
The manufacturer of the multivitamin product Connor had been taking disputed responsibility, denying that the product caused or contributed to his death.1 The coroner agreed there was insufficient evidence to establish a causal link between the product and the fatality.1
