A coroner in Brisbane has determined that severe vitamin C deficiency caused the death of a six-year-old boy with Down syndrome.1 Connor Dean died on August 10, 2024, after being hospitalized on July 18, having suffered from scurvy, a disease historically associated with sailors lacking fresh fruit and vegetables.1 Coroner Stephanie Gallagher ruled that vitamin C deficiency was the most probable cause of the boy's brain injury and cardiac arrest.1
An investigation into Connor's care revealed multiple nutritional deficiencies contributing to his deterioration.1 Blood tests showed his vitamin C levels fell below 1 micromole per liter, far below the normal range of 20 to 120 micromoles per liter, while he also lacked adequate vitamins A and E and had low levels of vitamins D and K.1 Over the preceding eleven months, Connor had gained only 300 grams in weight.1 The multivitamin supplement he was taking did not contain vitamin C.1 A pediatrician stated that "if Connor had taken a different multivitamin containing vitamin C, he would not have developed scurvy."1
The coroner found insufficient evidence to establish that the multivitamin product directly caused or contributed to Connor's death, with the focus instead on healthcare workers' failure to promptly detect his severe vitamin C deficiency.1 The manufacturer of the vitamin product has denied any causal link to the boy's death.1
