A collaborative archaeological team composed of the Shanghai Museum and Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities has completed the clearance of the above-ground sections of the Sekhmet Temple, marking the first large-scale systematic excavation of the temple and its surrounding area since 1962 1. The site is located in the village of Mit Rahina south of Cairo, within the core area of Memphis, ancient Egypt's first capital 1.
The excavation, conducted over two field seasons in 2025 and 2026, has yielded a rich collection of artifacts, including stone architectural elements inscribed with hieroglyphics, inscribed stelae, and statue fragments, predominantly dating to the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II during the New Kingdom period 1. Beyond the temple structures themselves, the team discovered residential remains constructed of mud brick, limestone grape-pressing installations, and workshop remains associated with faience production 1. Groundwater level fluctuations have posed significant technical challenges to the excavation, with current efforts limited to the areas above ground level 1.
