Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has raised alarms about multiple interconnected risks destabilizing the global financial system.1 Speaking at a G20 summit in North Carolina, Bailey cautioned that a combination of rising bond yields, excessive leverage among governments and corporations, and inflated valuations in artificial intelligence investments could trigger a cascading crisis.1
The warning comes as global government debt approaches 100 percent of GDP, with total debt exceeding 300 percent of global GDP.1 Private sector debt alone accounts for more than 140 percent of global GDP, while non-financial corporate debt stands at approximately 150 percent of GDP.1 Bailey specifically highlighted the danger posed by concentrated risk in the AI sector, where Nvidia has become a primary source of financing for hyperscale companies and AI developers through both equity and debt arrangements.1 He noted that "a major shock or combination of multiple shocks could simultaneously trigger multiple vulnerabilities."1
The vulnerabilities extend to high-profile firms whose valuations far exceed their current profitability. SpaceX is valued at nearly two trillion dollars despite posting losses of 541 million dollars in its June quarter, while artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has targeted a two trillion dollar valuation for its initial public offering.1 These dynamics, combined with rising interest rates and tightening regulatory pressure, have created conditions where financial stress in one sector could rapidly spread throughout interconnected markets.
