Cambodia's government has unveiled the National Mine Action Policy for 2026-2035, establishing ambitious timelines to address the country's ongoing contamination from landmines and explosive remnants of war.1 The policy sets a target to clear all discovered landmines by 2030 and to eliminate all identified cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war by 2035.1
Since 1992, Cambodia has made significant progress in mine clearance operations, having treated 3,541 square kilometers of affected land and destroyed over 1.2 million anti-personnel mines, 26,700 anti-tank mines, and 3.24 million other explosive remnants of war.1 However, the country still faces substantial challenges, with approximately 1,749 square kilometers of territory remaining contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance.1 Between 1979 and June 2026, landmines and explosive remnants of war claimed nearly 20,000 lives and injured or disabled over 45,000 people.1
